Breaking the Rules

Parents of students at the Danville School are upset that their children were threatened with an 85 day suspension from co-cirricular activities.
Three young women who are active in Danville's school sports are being accused of underage drinking at a social gathering on school grounds during their school break. Even though the event took place during their school vacation, the school has a strong zero-tolerance policy prohibiting the use and possession of drugs, and alcohol on school property. A special Danville School board meeting that was set for 4 P.M. on Monday March 22, 2010 gave the chance for the parents to express their opinions about the situation.
Nearly three-dozen parents and students attended the special meeting. Superintendent Martha Tucker limited the discussion during the school board meeting to the procedures and policy involved, forbidding discussion of special incidents. The parents of the three girls in question, expressed their feelings about cornering their children without being notified first. The parents who knew nothing of the plan or procedures attached to the zero-tolerance policy wanted to know how it was approved and why Danville school parents weren't informed about the changes. According to the Caledonian-Record, one angry parent was quoted, "It's not in the sports handbook, and I'm pretty sure it's not in the student handbook, the problem is there's this faceless kid making allegations- you need to talk to me first not take them into a room with a closed door." After much debate, it was agreed that the policy and the procedure plan for investigation will be on the school board agenda for its April 6th meeting.
