School Safety

On February 23, 2010 news broke of a shooting in Littleton, Colorado at the Deer Creek Middle School. Due to a brave teacher who jumped on the shooter, only 2 students were injured.

Although the middle school in Colorado is over two thousand miles away from Lyndonville Vermont, and while the Northeast Kingdom hasn't experienced a school shooting, the local schools are constantly monitoring to ensure their students' safety.

The Lyndon Town School for instance, keeps their doors locked during the day, and requires any person entering during school hours to use an intercom to state the reason for the visit. The main office can then allow the person to enter if deemed appropriate.

According to the National School Safety Center, the number of shootings occurring in schools has decreased after 1993.

Journalist Chris Shadrock brings you more details on how one school tries to keep their learning environment safe.
