Goodwin Family Sugar House

Goodwin Family Sugar House

From antique houses to sugar houses, St. Johnsbury is a town with people just as interesting as it's past.

At the Goodwin family maple farm the type of history kept in memory is family. Maple Sugarer, Neil Goodwin talks about his addiction to creating maple syrup.

"It's just a bug it's a fever. You know if the bug bites you, you're a sugar maker and you just can't get enough of it."

In an age defined by technology and the 24/7 work weeks that go along with it hard work and family values seem to be a lost art. Even in the small and seemingly simple life that is northern Vermont but at Goodwin family maple not much has changed over the years. Goodwin tells of his mothers background and how it rubbed off on him.

"Back when my mom was a little girl she sugared with her father and when she met my father she went up and helped them sugar and then they bought this piece of land and they started sugaring. Unfortunately my mom passed away she had a rich history in sugaring and loved it. She passed away early when we started, but dad continued with me so it really is a family tradition here and rich in family it's kind of cool to have that."

Step into the sugar shack and your taken back to a more straightforward time, one where families had to stick together for survival. Years passed but the wood stove still glows orange and the steam thick as it may be. The smoke fills the room with a sweet smelling mist and the Goodwin crew still comes together no longer for survival but just for good company. Aunts, uncles, sons, acquaintances and even the occasional tourist stop by to watch, help out, or just get in the way. Goodwin talks about his sugar house on the weekend.

"Sometimes in the weekend we have so much company in here that you can't move. Absolutely without a doubt we have a strong family, a very close family, we are very lucky."

"I love my family and to me family being together is everything and you're pretty lucky person if you have got a lot of love in the family. I hope when I go to my grave I go as a sugar maker in Vermont."

If you or your family want to experience the art of sugaring the Goodwin Farm is located just off exit 22 in St. Johnsbury.
