Dog Droppings

LYNDON - Most towns have a law that requires people to pick up after their dogs do their business, but the town of Lyndon doesn't.Lyndon Town Manager Dan Hill believes that Lyndon should have a law on cleaning up after a dog does their business.

"I think people need to take more responsibility," said Hill.  "Don't let your animal run loose, which people are still doing.  We attempt to catch them, but it's difficult to do.  Secondly, if your dog does defecate, pick up after it."

Hill would like to make it a $25 fine for someone who is caught not picking up after his or her animal.  Currently there is no law on dog defecation, but Hill is looking to change that.  Hill said he is bringing an amendment to the next select board meeting to in hopes to change the current dog ordinance.

Residence in the area seem to think that those who want to do the right thing will, and those who don't, simply won't.

"I think these (dog bags) are helpful for people who wanna clean up after their dog, but maybe forgot to bring something with them," said Lyndonville resident Tim Greenwood.  Greenwood added "Beyond that, I'm not really sure what it will accomplish.

Hill will present the amendment to the selectboard at the next meeting, Monday, November 21st.
