Chutters Combats Economy
LITTLETON, NH - Chutters, in Littleton, New Hampshire, is home to the worlds longest candy counter and is a staple in Northern New England.
Set up in an over 200-year-old building on Main Street, Chutters is still trying to flourish, even while facing the challenges of the current economy, and big box stores just down the road.
"That's the busiest store, I feel, on Main Street," said Violet Hopkins, Curator of the Littleton Historical Society Museum, "there's always people coming and going."
"All on Main Street we've all tried to find our niche, and try to be a specialty retailer," said Jim Alder, owner of Chutters, "That's what really attracts people and allows us to co-exist really healthily with the box stores at the other end of town".
Specialties like homemade fudge, producing over 10,000 pounds a year, as well as old fashion penny candy, like Mary Janes or Bit-o-Honeys.
"A lot of times you hear the adults saying I haven't seen this since I was a kid, that its a pixie sticks or squirrel nut zippers" said Alder.
In addition to the original store, Chutters has opened two new locations within the past four years. The newest opening last year in Lincoln, New Hampshire, and a smaller store that is actually located in-between peak at Bretton Woods Resort.
