Chamber Finds a New Home

ST. JOHNSBURY - After residing in St. Johnsbury's Pomerleau Building for decades, the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce has found a new home.
The reason for this is because the town of St. Johnsbury had notified the chamber that they wanted to be sole operators of the Welcome Center and wished to have a single tenant on the floor the chamber currently resides on.
Darcie McCann, NEK Chamber Executive Director says "The town of St. Johnsbury made it clear to us they wanted to be operators of the welcome center. And that wasn't entirely our wish and hope. We've been involved with tourism promotion in some aspects be it the information booth or the welcome center really going back decades."
The Chamber of Commerce's new location will be in the Green Mountain Mall. Although the chamber did not originally desire the move, it may be beneficial to businesses.
Green Mountain Mall Manager Jay Matthews says, "I think it'll help the businesses because the chamber helps area businesses. So, where better to have the chamber of commerce than in a mall, with other businesses around."
McCann says, "We're first and foremost a member based operation where people need to talk with us. The local population, it's really important that they be able to have access to it so the mall seemed a really good option for that."
The objective for the town of St. Johnsbury is to have one tenant on the second floor of the Pomerleau building. After the Chamber leaves the building, Senator Bernie Sanders' office will still be on that second floor. As of right now, there is no word whether Sanders' office will still reside in the building after the move.
There is no definite date for how long the move will take, but members of the Chamber have already begun moving out of the Pomerleau building while mall employees are preparing the vacant space for the new tenants to move in.
